Why Early Childhood?

Why Early Childhood?

Early childhood is a critical time for learning. Recent brain research reveals that newborns start life with billions of brain cells, which make connections from the first day of life.  By interacting with the world around them, babies learn a tremendous amount in the early months and years, including the basics of language and mathematics.  The richer and more secure the learning environment, the more young children learn.

These findings have revolutionized education. In the 19th century Americans created public schools to teach children “reading, writing, and ’rithmatic.” In the 20th century, communities built high schools to prepare young people for work.  Now in the 21st century our task is to maximize learning opportunities for our youngest children.
